EzyBiz LEX vs Clerx AI

Clerx AI is an AI intake platform for law firms from Clerx, Inc., whose terms are governed by New York law, with an AI receptionist that answers calls, website chats and texts. EzyBiz LEX is a business phone with an automated answering service built in, made in Melbourne for Australian law firms. Both are on the Smokeball marketplace. This page compares them, from Clerx's website and Smokeball's support documentation as at 30 September 2026.

The one difference that drives the rest

Clerx is an intake layer. Its AI answers the call, qualifies the enquiry against the firm's intake playbook, books the consultation and pushes the lead into Smokeball, with call transfers and escalation routing to staff. It is built around converting new enquiries, and the lawyer's own calls, call backs and texts happen on whatever phone the firm already has.

EzyBiz LEX is the lawyer's phone as well as the front desk. Existing clients, the other side's solicitor and new enquiries all ring the same business number in the app, the lawyer takes them directly when free, the answering service takes them when not, and each call is filed to the matter it belongs to.

scheduleThe working day

Six moments in a lawyer's day, handled two ways

The table says what each product has. These are the moments where a lawyer feels the difference.

You are at your desk and a client rings

With Clerx AI. Clerx's AI answers the call. Whether it then reaches you depends on the transfer and escalation rules set up for the firm, and the caller speaks to the AI first either way.

With EzyBiz LEX. Leave the line in Available and the call rings your phone directly, with the client's name, the matter and your last note on screen from the first ring. You answer as yourself, and when you hang up the summary, the transcript and the file note are written and filed without anyone typing them. If you miss the call, the answering service picks it up in the firm's name.

You walk into court at ten to ten

With Clerx AI. Clerx's website does not describe a way for a lawyer to change availability from a phone. Transfers follow the routing configured for the firm.

With EzyBiz LEX. Tap Unavailable on the Home tab as you walk in and the service takes every call from the next ring. Tap Screen on the way out and genuine callers are put through to you with a one-line summary, while cold callers stop at the front desk. There is no schedule to edit, no code to dial and nobody to notify.

A new enquiry rings at seven in the evening

With Clerx AI. This is what Clerx is built for. The AI qualifies the enquiry, books the consultation and creates the lead in Smokeball with the caller's details.

With EzyBiz LEX. The service answers in the firm's name at any hour, asks what the matter is about, the other party's name, any date that is close and how the caller found the firm, then books a consult or a call back time. The enquiry opens as a lead in Smokeball with the file note attached, and the booking is in the calendar.

You ring the client back

With Clerx AI. You ring back on your own phone. No line or calling app for the lawyer is listed, so the return call is outside Clerx and outside the record.

With EzyBiz LEX. Tap the contact in the app and the call goes out on the business number, so the client sees the firm's number and your personal mobile stays private. The return call is transcribed, summarised and filed to the same matter as the message that prompted it, and a text reply is drafted for you to read and send.

The note for the file

With Clerx AI. Smokeball's article says the call summary is logged to the contact record, with the time, duration and a summary of the enquiry.

With EzyBiz LEX. The file note is written when the caller hangs up, with the summary, the outcome, any booking and the follow-ups, and the transcript beneath it. It is filed to the matter in Smokeball or to your SharePoint library, and when the service cannot tell which matter a call belongs to it asks you in the app.

A busy month

With Clerx AI. Clerx does not publish prices, so the monthly figure at your call volume, and the currency it is billed in, are questions for its sales team.

With EzyBiz LEX. The subscription is the only figure. Thirty calls or three hundred, long intake calls or short ones, the month costs A$79.99 per lawyer.

Where Clerx AI is the better fit

A firm that advertises for new clients and wants every enquiry qualified and booked at any hour, in many languages, with recordings, searchable transcripts and integrations across a long list of legal systems, is who Clerx is built for.

Where EzyBiz LEX is the better fit

An Australian firm that wants one number per lawyer for every kind of call, from new and existing clients alike, with calls ringing straight through when the lawyer is free and each one filed to the Smokeball matter as a file note, in Australian dollars and with its records stored in Australian data centres.

Questions about EzyBiz LEX and Clerx AI

Smokeball's marketplace lists the Clerx integration for the USA as at 30 September 2026, and Clerx's website does not mention Australian numbers or Australian pricing. Ask Clerx directly.

Smokeball's support article for Clerx describes new leads, contacts, call summaries logged to the contact record and consultations synced to the calendar, and Clerx's own integration page also describes creating matters. EzyBiz LEX files each call to the matter as a completed task with the file note, plus a memo or a document, and also creates leads, callback tasks that sync both ways and calendar bookings.

No. It is the lawyer's business line, so existing clients, other solicitors and the court ring it as well. An existing client's call is filed to their matter, and with verified matter conversations turned on a client who proves they hold the mobile on the contact record can hear where their matter is up to.

No. The answering service is automated and says so. In Screen mode it puts genuine callers through to the lawyer, and a caller who asks for a person is offered to be put through or to leave a message for the lawyer.

It was compiled from Clerx's public website and Smokeball's support documentation on 30 September 2026. If something on the Clerx side has changed, tell us and we will correct it.
