3CX for law firms in Australia

3CX is phone system software licensed per system each year and installed by a partner, who supplies the lines, the handsets and the support. For a law firm the partner is the product, and what reaches the matter depends on which partner's connector the firm buys.

3CX suits a law firm of ten or more that wants desk handsets, a reception desk it staffs itself and a managed phone system from an Australian partner, with Smokeball contact sync or call logging through Cloudchat or Aatrox.

The licence is per system, not per user, so the price depends entirely on the partner's package. A call nobody answers goes to voicemail or to the firm's own receptionist.

EzyBiz LEX is ours and appears under alternatives. Everything said about the system on this page comes from its own website and from Smokeball, LEAP, Clio and Actionstep as at 3 October 2026, with the sources at the foot of the page, and where a site is silent the page says so.

3CX for a law firm, in six facts

As published by 3CX and by the practice management vendors on 3 October 2026.

What it is

Phone system software, hosted or on site, licensed per system per year and sold through partners who add the SIP lines, the installation, the handsets and the support.

Published Australian price

3CX publishes its licence prices per system and per year; the monthly cost of the whole service, with lines and support, is set by the partner.

Smokeball

Smokeball documents two partner integrations: Cloudchat, which syncs Smokeball contacts into 3CX, and Aatrox Communications, which syncs contacts and logs calls.

LEAP, Clio and Actionstep

Ask the partner. No integration is documented by the three vendors.

Who answers when the lawyer cannot

Voicemail, or a receptionist the firm employs at the desk; a 3CX call queue can ring several handsets first.

Handsets

Yes. 3CX is the system on our guide most often sold with desk phones, which suits a reception desk.

Who it suits, and who it does not

It suits

A firm with a reception desk, several lawyers at desks and an IT provider it already trusts, that wants handsets, call queues and one supplier for the phones and the network. A Smokeball firm that wants contacts and call logging through Aatrox.

It does not suit

A sole practitioner or a firm whose lawyers are mostly out of the office, because the system assumes a desk and a person at it. A firm that wants a file note for every call on the matter, which neither partner connector produces. A firm that wants a published per-user price.

Alternatives for a law firm

The two systems on our guide that were built for lawyers, with what each writes to the matter.

EzyBiz LEX

A business phone for each lawyer with QRYSTEL intelligence, an automated answering service, on the same line. It answers the calls nobody took, takes the intake, transfers a qualified lead to whoever is on intake, and files every call to the Smokeball matter or SharePoint; Clio is in development and it does not file into LEAP or Actionstep. A$79.99 a lawyer a month with GST included and nothing per call, with QRYSTEL intelligence included when you join by 31 January 2027. More.

VXT

A cloud phone system and AI notetaker for lawyers with published integrations for Smokeball, LEAP, Clio and Actionstep: time entries and matter notes for every call a lawyer takes. A$90 a user a month billed monthly, before tax, plus $5 a number. The right pick for a LEAP or Actionstep firm. More.

FAQ

Questions about 3CX for law firms

Through two partners documented on Smokeball's support hub as at 3 October 2026: Cloudchat, which syncs Smokeball contacts into 3CX, and Aatrox Communications, which syncs contacts and logs calls. Ask the partner to show you what a logged call looks like on the matter before you buy.

Not that LEAP documents. A LEAP firm that wants calls on the matter should look at VXT, which is on the LEAP Marketplace, or at CallSmart from Boab IT, which LEAP names and which pairs with Boab IT's own hosted phone system.

3CX's own licence is priced per system per year and published on its ordering page. The lines, the handsets, the installation and the support come from the partner, so the only useful figure is the partner's monthly quote for the whole service, per lawyer.

Voicemail, or whoever is on the queue the call rolls to. 3CX does not take a legal intake or write to the matter, so a small firm without a receptionist is back to the message pad.
